Triptorelin

Also known as: Decapeptyl, Trelstar, GnRH Agonist

A long-acting GnRH agonist for hormone regulation and fertility.

Overview

Triptorelin is a synthetic GnRH agonist with much longer duration than natural GnRH. Initial stimulation followed by receptor downregulation makes it useful for both fertility and hormone suppression.

Mechanism of Action

Initially stimulates LH/FSH release (flare effect), then causes receptor downregulation leading to hormone suppression. Used for fertility stimulation or chemical castration depending on protocol.

Pharmacokinetics

Depot formulations provide 1-6 month duration. Initial hormone spike followed by suppression.

Side Effects & Contraindications

Reported Side Effects

  • Hot flashes
  • Decreased libido
  • Initial flare
  • Bone density loss (long-term)

Contraindications

  • Pregnancy
